Prone Bone Position, Speed Bump and Dragon: Low-Effort Lying-Down Sex Positions
The prone bone position, speed bump and dragon compared: setup, pillows and wedges, and who each suits. Low effort mostly for the partner lying face down.

General education, not medical advice. If something here worries you, talk with a clinician.
Table of Contents
The prone bone position, the speed bump and the dragon all start the same way. The receiving partner lies face down and the bed does the holding, so they do not have to balance on hands and knees or hold a plank. The partner on top still works: in all three they hold some or all of their own weight on their forearms or knees.
That is why these three turn up on lists of lazy sex positions and low effort sex positions. People with fatigue, chronic pain or a disability look for them, and so does anyone at the end of a long day.
So low effort here mainly means low effort for the receiving partner. The three still differ in useful ways. The partner on top does a different job in each, and the pillow and the closeness of the two bodies change too. Each position below gets its own setup notes, who it suits and what to watch. A side-by-side table and a practical section on pillows, wedges and towels follow.
Why some positions take so little effort
The mattress carries the weight
On all fours, the wrists and knees carry the body for as long as the position lasts. Lying face down moves that load onto the mattress. Sexologist Laura Deitsch, quoted by the arthritis site CreakyJoints, says lying on the stomach gives a receiving partner with hip, hand or knee problems a lot of relief. A pillow under the hips then sets the angle, so no core muscle has to hold it.
Small movements and a choice of who moves
Short rocking or circling movements cost less energy than long strokes. They also ask for less range from the hips and lower back. Effort can sit almost entirely with one person, too. In each position here the receiving partner can stay still while the other sets the pace, and couples can trade roles from one night to the next. Bedsider, the sexual-health project of Power to Decide, builds its fatigue-friendly “downward doggy” on a pile of pillows, and the partner behind can lie down as well.
Who looks for lazy sex positions
The need is common. SELF reports research finding that up to 78% of people with chronic pain have difficulties with sex. Pain is only one reason, though. Illness-related fatigue, a disability that makes kneeling hard, recovery from an injury, or plain tiredness after work all shrink the list of positions that feel good. Lying-down sex positions keep something on that list.
The prone bone position: flat on the stomach
What is prone bone? It is doggy style lying flat, and prone is simply the anatomical word for face down. In this position the receiving partner lies flat on their stomach, while the other partner is behind and over them. Some people simply call it prone doggy.
Setting up the prone bone
The receiving partner lies on the stomach with the head turned to whichever side feels easier. A thin pillow under the chest helps if the neck complains. Sources disagree about the partner on top. Cosmopolitan UK, quoting columnist Zachary Zane, says the top can stay raised on their arms or lie fully flat with their whole weight on the partner. The sex-position site LoveCuri describes the top lying directly along the receiver’s back, legs over or just outside theirs.

Entry is harder than in doggy style because the flat body closes the angle. Many couples start on hands and knees and lower down together, or the receiver lifts the hips slightly, and lube helps.
Who the prone bone suits
The receiving partner holds nothing up and can stay completely still. That makes this face down sex position a good fit for sore wrists, tired arms and knees that dislike all fours. CreakyJoints describes the same face-down, legs-together shape as a relief for hip, hand and knee problems. On a very soft mattress, a pillow under the hips stops the receiver from sinking out of position.
What to watch in prone doggy
Weight comes first, because a whole adult body is a lot to carry on your back. Most tops take the load on their forearms and knees, lying down only as far as the person underneath wants. The neck comes second, since lying face down means the head turns to one side, and CreakyJoints advises skipping this shape with neck issues.
Reaching the clitoris is awkward with the front of the body on the mattress. Zane suggests a small bullet vibrator between the body and the mattress, while admitting it only works sometimes.
The speed bump sex position: a pillow under the hips
The speed bump sex position is the prone bone with a pillow doing the lifting. Men’s Health describes the receiving partner lying face down with a pillow or sex wedge under the lower belly and hips. The raised hips are the bump, and they create an angle the receiver would otherwise have to hold with muscle.
Setting up the speed bump
In the Men’s Health version, the other partner kneels behind and leans forward, hands planted on the bed on either side of the receiver’s chest. Sex educator Emily Morse calls it a riff on doggy style with a pillow under the hips.

Not every source agrees on the shape. The sexual-wellness retailer Hello Cake describes the receiver leaning over a fitness ball, the bed or a bench with the feet on the floor. That version is closer to a standing rear-entry position, and it asks more of the legs. This guide uses the lying-down version, since that is the one that saves effort. For positions built around the side of the mattress, see edge of bed sex positions.
Who the speed bump suits
Mostly, it suits a receiving partner with nothing left to give. Certified sex educator Javay Frye-Nekrasova told Men’s Health it is low impact for the bottom, who does not need to support or hold themselves up. It also fixes height gaps between partners. Sexologist Marla Renee Stewart suggests stacking as many pillows as needed, and Morse lists height differences as one of its main benefits.
What to watch with the pillow lift
The lift that makes it easy also makes it deep. Stewart warns that the depth can be overwhelming or painful for the person underneath. Check in often, and agree on a word for slower before you start. Morse advises easing in with plenty of lube instead of starting hard. Men’s Health also warns that very vigorous movement can slip from vaginal to anal penetration by accident, which can be extremely painful, so keep the pace controlled.
The partner behind does almost all the work, and Frye-Nekrasova notes it can turn into too much of a workout. A slower pace helps, and so does a folded blanket under the kneeling partner’s knees.
The dragon position: slow and close
The dragon sex position is the slow, close version of lying face down. Both partners lie flat, the top stretched along the receiver’s back, and the movement is small circles instead of thrusting. Two mainstream magazines describe it in nearly the same way, which is unusual for a slang position name.
Setting up the dragon
According to Women’s Health UK, the receiving partner lies on the front with a cushion under the pubic bone to lift the hips slightly, legs a little apart. Cosmopolitan India compares it to the flatiron position with a pillow added. In its version the top lies face down too, and both partners usually rest their arms above their heads.

The partner on top then moves in gentle circles. The small differences between the two descriptions are about the legs. Women’s Health has them slightly apart, while Cosmopolitan India leaves leg position open.
Who the dragon suits
The dragon position involves the least movement of the three. Small circles need almost no range of motion from either back, and the receiver can stay fully relaxed. The top does hold some weight off their partner, as the next section explains. Full-length body contact is the other draw, and Cosmopolitan India frames it as a position for slow, touch-focused evenings, with the neck and back in easy reach for kisses. Women’s Health UK adds that the slower motion is likely to delay the top partner’s orgasm, which some couples want.
What to watch in the dragon
The top partner should keep most of their weight on forearms and knees, because lying fully on someone for a long stretch gets heavy fast. Two stacked bodies also trap heat, so a light sheet works better than a duvet. Cosmopolitan India pictures both partners with arms resting above their heads, which works for short spells; for a longer session the top usually shifts onto the forearms. Arms overhead can also bother stiff shoulders, and resting them by the sides is fine.
Slow is the whole point, so both people need to want slow. If one partner wants more pace, the speed bump suits that night better.
Prone bone vs speed bump vs dragon at a glance
The biggest differences between the three are who does the work and how steep the angle is. Here is how they line up.
| Prone bone | Speed bump | Dragon | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Effort for the receiver | Almost none; can stay still | Almost none; the pillow holds the hips | Almost none; can match the circles if wanted |
| Effort for the top | Moderate; arms or knees carry their weight | Highest; kneels and does nearly all the moving | Low to moderate; small circles, weight held partly on forearms and knees |
| Depth | Often limited when lying flat with legs together; legs apart or a lift under the hips can make it deeper | Often deep, because the pillow lifts the hips; can overwhelm | Varies; circles rather than strokes, with optional slow deep thrusts |
| Closeness | Full back contact if the top lies down | Less contact; the top leans over on straight arms | Most contact; bodies stretched together |
| What supports the body | The mattress | A pillow or wedge under the hips | The mattress plus a pillow under the pubic bone |
| Main strain | The top’s weight; the neck turned sideways | Deep angle; the top’s stamina | The top’s weight; heat and stiff shoulders |
Read the table by asking who has energy tonight. All three keep the receiver’s wrists and knees off duty. The big swing is on the other side, where the top goes from small, slow circles in the dragon to doing a full workout in the speed bump.
All three also turn the head to one side. If your neck is the problem, a side-lying position such as spooning lets the head rest on a pillow facing forward.
Pillows, wedges and towels: where each one goes
A pillow is the only equipment these positions need, and where it goes decides what it does.
Under the hips, the chest or the knees
Under the hips and lower belly, a pillow lifts the pelvis and changes the angle, and that lift is the whole speed bump. A thinner pillow under the pubic bone gives the smaller lift the dragon uses. Under the chest or head, a flat pillow means the neck turns less and leaves room to breathe.

The kneeling partner needs padding too. On a firm mattress or a floor, a folded blanket or cushion under the knees makes the speed bump last longer.
Firm pillow or foam wedge
Ordinary bed pillows squash under body weight, so the angle drifts as you go. HealthCentral describes purpose-made sex pillows as high-density foam that holds its shape, usually with a machine-washable cover. WebMD separates the terms: a wedge is a smaller pillow for one area, such as the pelvis, while a ramp supports the torso and lower back.
Shops use those names interchangeably, so check the size before you buy. A specialist product is optional anyway. The Fibro Guy, a hypermobility rehabilitation blog, notes that cheap post-surgery wedges do much the same job as sex-specific ones.
Towels and small extras
A towel over the pillow keeps it clean. A rolled towel can even be the lift itself, as LittleThings suggests for the speed bump.
Face-down positions make hand access awkward, so a small bullet vibrator is a common extra. Stewart recommends tucking one between the receiver and the pillow in the speed bump.
Adapting face-down positions for pain, hypermobility and pregnancy
Face-down positions ask little of the receiving partner, but that does not make them right for every body. Depth in all three depends on the hip angle, the pillow height, how far the partner on top moves and each person’s anatomy, so the receiver should be the one who decides when to add height or depth. The changes below are starting points, not rules.
Back, hip and joint pain
The clinical rule is short. Dr. Hilda Hutcherson, quoted in the clinician publication MedCentral, advises positions that put less pressure on the painful area, with pillows supporting it. For back pain, a clinician quoted by SELF suggests the receiving partner lie stomach-down on a wedge, which can put less pressure on the back than missionary.
Hip pain gets similar advice. The Fibro Guy reports that lying prone with pillows under the hips comes up again and again in patient communities. It also passes on a timing tip: change position every few minutes, because holding one shape for a long time can cause pain even at a comfortable angle.
Hypermobile joints
With loose joints, the risk is a joint pushed to the end of its range while under load. The Fibro Guy’s rule is to keep joints in their stable mid range and support them from outside. In practice that means legs only slightly apart, pillows under the hips and knees, and no shape held for long. If anything clicks or shifts, stop, return slowly to neutral and check before going on. These tips come from a rehabilitation blog rather than research on sex positions, so a physiotherapist who knows your joints is the better guide to which shapes are stable for you.
Pregnancy and side-lying options
For a healthy pregnancy, ACOG says most sexual activity is safe, and it suggests trying different positions as the belly grows. That general advice does not say any particular face-down position suits a pregnant body, so let comfort decide and stop if lying on the belly feels wrong. Morse suggests moving the speed bump pillow under the hip bones and upper thighs, off the belly.
Later on, side-lying is the easier swap. With spooning, both partners lie on their sides facing the same way, which keeps the closeness with no weight on the bump. Call your ob-gyn about severe, lasting cramps or heavy bleeding after sex, or if you have pregnancy complications.
When pain during sex needs a professional
Soreness from holding one shape usually fades once you move. Sharp pain, pain that returns every time, or pain that follows you from position to position needs a different response.
You would not be the first to ask. ACOG says nearly 3 out of 4 women have pain during intercourse at some point in their lives. It advises seeing an ob-gyn or another health professional about frequent or severe pain. The aim is to rule out causes such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts or vaginismus. A physical therapist may join the assessment and treatment.
Pain does not always have one cause. When new positions and strategies have not helped, MedCentral’s guidance for clinicians is a referral to a sex therapist. If you live with a joint condition, the physiotherapist or doctor who already treats it is a good person to ask about positions.
FAQ: prone bone, speed bump and dragon
What is prone bone, and why is it called prone?
Prone is the medical word for lying face down. In the prone bone, the receiving partner lies flat on the stomach while the other partner is behind and over them. That is why many guides call it doggy style lying flat. Sources differ on whether the top lies fully on the partner or stays raised on the arms.
What is the speed bump sex position?
It is a face-down position with a pillow or wedge under the receiver’s lower belly and hips, while the other partner kneels behind. The pillow is the bump, lifting the hips so the person underneath has almost nothing to do. One retailer describes a version that leans over a ball or bench instead.
Is prone bone safe while pregnant?
ACOG says most sexual activity is safe in a healthy pregnancy, but that general advice does not rate specific positions. Comfort is the usual guide: if lying on the belly feels wrong, stop, move the pillows to the hips and thighs, or switch to a side-lying position. Ask your ob-gyn about positions if you have complications, bleeding or a condition affecting your joints.
Is prone bone good for conceiving?
No position has been shown to help. Shady Grove Fertility says there are no studies showing that any one position raises the chance of pregnancy. Lying with your legs up afterward is not needed either, according to the same clinic. Choose the position that feels comfortable for both of you.
Are lazy sex positions still good sex?
Low effort describes how hard the bodies work. It says nothing about how good the sex feels. Each of the three leaves room for a small vibrator or a hand between the receiver and the mattress or pillow. That helps, because penetration alone is rarely enough for many women to orgasm. For more, see how to have an orgasm.
Choosing a lying-down position for tonight
Start with the body you have tonight. If you want the simplest setup, with nothing but a mattress, try the prone bone. If one of you has energy and the other has none, the speed bump puts a pillow in charge. On a flare day, or when closeness matters more than pace, the dragon asks the least of both of you.
Each one adjusts with a pillow moved an inch or a towel folded twice. If a face-down shape bothers your neck, belly or back, roll onto your sides and spoon instead. Saying out loud what needs to change belongs to the position as much as the pillow does.
